In this first issue the editorial committee has decided not to pursue a particular theme, but rather to invite papers more generally in order to identify matters that are of most current significance. The two papers published (momentum is building with many submissions currently under review for the next issue) have focussed on managing online discussion, and tutor preparation for teaching. Alcock and Richardson, from Central Queensland University, consider the purpose and function of discussion lists as a means to engage students, and Bell, University of Sydney, explores student tutors’ preparation for tutoring.
